What actually uses the most electricity in a house

Ask people what uses the most electricity and they say lights, televisions and phone chargers. The survey data says space heating, water heating and air conditioning, and it is not close. Here is the ranking, with the numbers.

The ranking

These come from the EIA’s Residential Energy Consumption Survey, which measures what households actually consume rather than asking them to estimate. One property of the figures matters enormously and is almost always missed: they are conditional. The space-heating number is the average among homes that heat with electricity, not an average smeared across homes that burn gas. That is what makes them useful for a specific house, and it is why they do not sum to the total.

Why the intuition is wrong

Two things mislead. The first is visibility: you interact with lights and screens constantly and with the water heater never, so the things you touch feel like the things that cost. The second is wattage. A hair dryer is rated at 1,600 W and a refrigerator at 150 W, so the hair dryer feels like the expensive one — but wattage is a rate, not a quantity, and ten minutes a day against twenty-four hours a day settles it.

The rating column and the cost column are almost unrelated. The hours column is what decides.

A hair dryer is rated more than ten times a refrigerator and costs a fraction as much to run. That single comparison is worth more than any list of energy-saving tips, because it tells you which question to ask: not “how many watts”, but “how many watt-hours”.

It depends heavily on where you live

A national ranking hides an enormous regional spread. Cooling barely registers in the marine Pacific Northwest and dominates the Gulf Coast; electric heating is the reverse.

Your own state’s page uses its division’s figures rather than the national ones, and prices them at your state’s rate — which is the other half of the answer, since electricity costs several times more in some states than others.

How this ranking changed, and why the folklore lags

Most household energy advice was written for a house that no longer exists. Three shifts have rearranged the list within one generation, and the advice has not caught up with any of them.

  1. Lighting collapsed. An incandescent bulb turned about 90% of its electricity into heat rather than light. LED replacements deliver the same light for roughly a sixth of the power, and lighting fell from a headline item to a modest one. Almost every “turn off the lights” article predates this.
  2. Screens got bigger but far more efficient. A plasma television could draw 300 W; a larger LED set draws under 100. Meanwhile the number of screens per household rose, so the category is roughly flat rather than falling.
  3. Standby was regulated down. Idle draw that used to be measured in tens of watts per device is now typically one or two, which is why the vampire-power statistic has aged so badly. The arithmetic on that is here.

What did not change is heating, cooling and hot water. Those are set by physics — the temperature difference you are maintaining and the mass of water you are warming — and no efficiency improvement has moved them out of the top three. That is why the ranking looks so different from the advice.

End uses are the right way to think about a bill. But people own appliances, not end uses, so here is the same question answered at the level of individual devices.

Note what is not near the top: nothing you switch on and off deliberately. The expensive things run unattended, hold a temperature, or both. The full list of all 120 is here.

What this means you should actually do

  1. Find out what your water heater is. If it is electric, it is probably your second-largest line and you have never thought about it. A heat pump water heater cuts it by roughly two thirds.
  2. Check whether your heating is using backup resistance heat. On a heat pump this is the single most common cause of a bill that triples in January, and it produces no warning of any kind.
  3. Move the thermostat before you change any equipment. Each degree is worth roughly 3–5% of that end use, and it costs nothing.
  4. Only then look at the small stuff. Lighting and electronics are worth doing and will not solve a large bill on their own.

Questions

What uses the most electricity in a home?
Space heating, water heating and air conditioning, in whichever order your climate and equipment dictate. In a home using electricity for all three they are roughly two thirds of the bill. Refrigeration is the largest single always-on appliance but is far smaller than any of those three.
Do lights use a lot of electricity?
Not any more. Lighting was a significant share of a household bill when incandescent bulbs were universal; LED replacements use about a sixth as much for the same light, and lighting has fallen to a small fraction of a typical bill. It is still worth switching lights off, but it will not fix a bill that has doubled.
Does leaving things plugged in use much electricity?
Less than the advice suggests. A realistic whole-house always-on load is 50–100 W, which is real money over a year but nowhere near the quarter-of-your-bill figure often quoted. The devices worth attention are the ones with a pump, a compressor or a heating element, not chargers.
Is it cheaper to use gas than electricity?
For heating and hot water, usually yes on a pure fuel-cost basis in most of the US, because gas is cheaper per unit of energy delivered. The exception is a heat pump, which delivers two to four units of heat per unit of electricity and can beat gas outright depending on the local price ratio. For cooking the difference is small either way.
