Why this is lower than the number you will see elsewhere
Almost every published answer to this question multiplies the rating on the label by the hours the appliance is switched on. For a crypto mining rig that gives 26,280 kWh a year, or $4,820.
Deliberately constant. A miner is designed to run at full load continuously, which makes it the highest-duty load in any house that has one.
The arithmetic, step by step
Nothing here is hidden, so you can check it or change it. Working in the order the formula runs:
- 3,000 W — what it draws while it is actually drawing. This is the rating on the plate.
- × 100% — the share of its in-service time it is really pulling that. Deliberately constant. A miner is designed to run at full load continuously, which makes it the highest-duty load in any house that has one.
That gives 3000 W averaged across the hours it is on. - × 24 hours a day × 365 days — A single ASIC unit running around the clock.
3000 × 24 × 365 ÷ 1,000 = 26,280 kWh a year. - × 18.34¢ — the US average residential rate for June 2026.
26,280 kWh × 18.34¢ = $4,820 a year.

The thing worth knowing
This is the only appliance on this site whose entire purpose is to convert electricity into heat as a by-product of computation, and it does so at full rate for all 8,760 hours. At the US average rate a single 3 kW unit costs more per year to run than most households spend on all their other electricity combined. It also dumps 3 kW of heat into the building, which in summer the air conditioning must then remove at further cost.
What it costs in your state
