Why this is lower than the number you will see elsewhere

Almost every published answer to this question multiplies the rating on the label by the hours the appliance is switched on. For an electric furnace that gives 36,000 kWh a year, or $6,602.

The arithmetic, step by step

Nothing here is hidden, so you can check it or change it. Working in the order the formula runs:

  1. 15,000 W — what it draws while it is actually drawing. This is the rating on the plate.
  2. × 25% — the share of its in-service time it is really pulling that. Staged elements. The whole bank energises only in deep cold.
    That gives 3750 W averaged across the hours it is on.
  3. × 16 hours a day × 150 days — Whole-home resistance heating in a cold climate.
    3750 × 16 × 150 ÷ 1,000 = 9,000 kWh a year.
  4. + standby — 10 W for the other 8.0 hours a day, which is 12 kWh a year. People leave this out and it is not always small.
  5. × 18.34¢ — the US average residential rate for June 2026.
    9,012 kWh × 18.34¢ = $1,653 a year.

The thing worth knowing

This is the single most expensive way to heat a house that is still legal to install. Every kilowatt-hour buys exactly one kilowatt-hour of heat, against three or more for a heat pump in the same house.

Against heat pump (heating)

Replacing resistance heat with an air-source heat pump is normally the largest single bill reduction available to an all-electric home. In numbers: an electric furnace costs $1,653 a year on these assumptions, and heat pump (heating) doing a comparable job costs $423 — a difference of $1,230 a year, or $12,298 over ten years at today’s rate.

Both at 18.34¢/kWh, each on its own standard usage assumption. Ten years is roughly the service life of either.
