Why this is lower than the number you will see elsewhere
Almost every published answer to this question multiplies the rating on the label by the hours the appliance is switched on. For a pool pump that gives 2,160 kWh a year, or $396.

The arithmetic, step by step
Nothing here is hidden, so you can check it or change it. Working in the order the formula runs:
- 1,500 W — what it draws while it is actually drawing. This is the rating on the plate.
- × 100% — the share of its in-service time it is really pulling that. A single-speed pump draws its full rating for every hour it runs.
That gives 1500 W averaged across the hours it is on. - × 8 hours a day × 180 days — A single-speed pump on an eight-hour timer through the season.
1500 × 8 × 180 ÷ 1,000 = 2,160 kWh a year. - × 18.34¢ — the US average residential rate for June 2026.

The thing worth knowing
Pump power rises with the cube of flow rate, so running at half speed uses about an eighth of the power per hour. Because you then run twice as long for the same turnover, a variable-speed pump can cut pool pumping energy by roughly 70%. This is the largest single saving available to most pool owners.
