Why this is lower than the number you will see elsewhere
Almost every published answer to this question multiplies the rating on the label by the hours the appliance is switched on. For an LED television that gives 164 kWh a year, or $30.

The arithmetic, step by step
Nothing here is hidden, so you can check it or change it. Working in the order the formula runs:
- 90 W — what it draws while it is actually drawing. This is the rating on the plate.
- × 100% — the share of its in-service time it is really pulling that. Backlight draw is steady for a given brightness setting.
That gives 90 W averaged across the hours it is on. - × 5 hours a day × 365 days — A 55-inch 4K set, five hours a day, out-of-the-box brightness.
90 × 5 × 365 ÷ 1,000 = 164 kWh a year. - + standby — 1 W for the other 19.0 hours a day, which is 6.9 kWh a year. People leave this out and it is not always small.

The thing worth knowing
Screen size drives the number, not the technology: a 75-inch set draws roughly twice a 55-inch one. The store demo mode most sets ship in runs the backlight at maximum and can double the draw against the normal picture mode.
What it costs in your state
