Why this is lower than the number you will see elsewhere
Almost every published answer to this question multiplies the rating on the label by the hours the appliance is switched on. For a standalone ice maker that gives 3,066 kWh a year, or $562.
Cycles between freezing a batch and harvesting it, and then keeps the finished ice frozen — so it never truly stops while switched on.
The arithmetic, step by step
Nothing here is hidden, so you can check it or change it. Working in the order the formula runs:
- 350 W — what it draws while it is actually drawing. This is the rating on the plate.
- × 45% — the share of its in-service time it is really pulling that. Cycles between freezing a batch and harvesting it, and then keeps the finished ice frozen — so it never truly stops while switched on.
That gives 158 W averaged across the hours it is on. - × 24 hours a day × 365 days — An undercounter unit kept switched on year round.

The thing worth knowing
Making ice is expensive twice: freezing the water, and then refrigerating the bin to stop what you made from melting. Most standalone machines have an uninsulated or lightly insulated bin, so a large fraction of the ice melts and is remade continuously. A unit left on through winter can cost more than the freezer it sits next to.
