The thing worth knowing

Making ice is expensive twice: freezing the water, and then refrigerating the bin to stop what you made from melting. Most standalone machines have an uninsulated or lightly insulated bin, so a large fraction of the ice melts and is remade continuously. A unit left on through winter can cost more than the freezer it sits next to.
