Why this is lower than the number you will see elsewhere

Almost every published answer to this question multiplies the rating on the label by the hours the appliance is switched on. For an air fryer that gives 150 kWh a year, or $28.

The arithmetic, step by step

Nothing here is hidden, so you can check it or change it. Working in the order the formula runs:

  1. 1,500 W — what it draws while it is actually drawing. This is the rating on the plate.
  2. × 60% — the share of its in-service time it is really pulling that. Cycles on a thermostat once up to temperature, but the chamber is small so it spends more of its time at full draw than a full-size oven does.
    That gives 900 W averaged across the hours it is on.
  3. × 0.4 hours a day × 250 days — About 25 minutes most days.
    900 × 0.4 × 250 ÷ 1,000 = 90 kWh a year.
  4. + standby — 1 W for the other 23.6 hours a day, which is 5.9 kWh a year. People leave this out and it is not always small.
  5. × 18.34¢ — the US average residential rate for June 2026.
    96 kWh × 18.34¢ = $18 a year.

The thing worth knowing

An air fryer draws about half what a full oven draws and reaches temperature in a couple of minutes instead of fifteen. The saving is almost entirely in the preheat it avoids, not in the wattage.
