Bing suggests this pairing to anyone typing “air fryer vs”, and the answer people expect is usually the wrong way round: the machine with the higher wattage and the longer cycle is the cheaper one here. At the US average rate of 18.34¢ per kilowatt-hour the gap is $7.26 a year.

The verdict

The air fryer costs less per year, and the microwave costs less per meal. Both are true because they are not doing the same job. A microwave heats the food and nothing else, which is why it is unbeatable for a plate of leftovers — no chamber to bring up to temperature, no air to circulate, done in ninety seconds. An air fryer heats a small chamber and moves hot air through it, which takes longer and browns things a microwave never will. The annual gap between them is an artefact of how often each gets used rather than of which is more efficient.

The assumptions behind those figures

Nothing above is a manufacturer’s claim. 1,500 W at 60% for 0.4 hours a day, 250 days a year, is where air fryer’s 96 kWh comes from; 1,200 W at 100% for 0.25 hours over 365 days is where microwave oven’s 136 kWh comes from. The duty cycle is the input most published comparisons leave out, and it is why the ratings and the running costs are not in the same proportion here.

Rated watts × duty cycle × hours × days, plus standby, times your rate — the same function that produces every figure on this site. For air fryer: 1,500 W × 60% × 0.4 h × 250 days ÷ 1,000 = 96 kWh, which at 18.34¢ is $18. Microwave oven runs through the identical arithmetic on its own assumptions and lands at $25. Which should I use to reheat leftovers?
The microwave, without much argument. It puts energy into the water in the food rather than into the air around it, so nothing is spent bringing a chamber up to temperature, and it finishes in a fraction of the time. An air fryer reheats well when you want the outside crisp again — a slice of pizza, roast potatoes — and that is the only reason to choose it for the job.
Does the higher-wattage machine cost more to run?
Not on its own. Cost is watts multiplied by hours, and the air fryer here is rated higher but runs at that rating for less of its cycle: once the small chamber is up to temperature the element cycles, so the average draw across a cook sits well below the plate rating. A microwave at full power runs its magnetron continuously, so its rating is closer to what it actually pulls.
Does my state change the answer?
It changes the size of the gap, never its direction. The same pair costs $21 a year apart in Hawaii and $5.19 in Nevada. Whichever uses less electricity uses less everywhere; only what that is worth moves.
