Why this is lower than the number you will see elsewhere

Almost every published answer to this question multiplies the rating on the label by the hours the appliance is switched on. For a window air conditioner that gives 990 kWh a year, or $182.

  1. 900 W — what it draws while it is actually drawing. This is the rating on the plate.
  2. × 60% — the share of its in-service time it is really pulling that. Compressor cycles on the room thermostat. A unit oversized for the room cycles more, cools less evenly and dehumidifies worse.
    That gives 540 W averaged across the hours it is on.
  3. × 10 hours a day × 110 days — A 10,000 BTU unit in one bedroom, summer.
    540 × 10 × 110 ÷ 1,000 = 594 kWh a year.
  4. + standby — 1 W for the other 14.0 hours a day, which is 1.5 kWh a year. People leave this out and it is not always small.
  5. × 18.34¢ — the US average residential rate for June 2026.
    596 kWh × 18.34¢ = $109 a year.

The thing worth knowing

BTU rating and watts are different numbers. Divide BTU by CEER to get watts: a 10,000 BTU unit at CEER 12 draws about 833 W. Buying more BTU than the room needs costs money twice, in purchase price and in short-cycling.
