Why this is lower than the number you will see elsewhere
Almost every published answer to this question multiplies the rating on the label by the hours the appliance is switched on. For a heated towel rail that gives 1,051 kWh a year, or $193.
Most have no thermostat at all — they are a resistance element that is either on or off, and the great majority are left on.
The arithmetic, step by step
Nothing here is hidden, so you can check it or change it. Working in the order the formula runs:
- 120 W — what it draws while it is actually drawing. This is the rating on the plate.
- × 100% — the share of its in-service time it is really pulling that. Most have no thermostat at all — they are a resistance element that is either on or off, and the great majority are left on.
That gives 120 W averaged across the hours it is on. - × 24 hours a day × 365 days — Left permanently on, which is how most of them are used.

The thing worth knowing
A small number multiplied by 8,760 hours. Because there is usually no thermostat, this is one of the few household loads where nameplate arithmetic is exactly right — and because it is left on all year, including through summer when nobody wants a warm bathroom, it costs far more than its modest wattage suggests.
