Why this is lower than the number you will see elsewhere
Almost every published answer to this question multiplies the rating on the label by the hours the appliance is switched on. For a water cooler / dispenser that gives 876 kWh a year, or $161.

The arithmetic, step by step
Nothing here is hidden, so you can check it or change it. Working in the order the formula runs:
- 100 W — what it draws while it is actually drawing. This is the rating on the plate.
- × 35% — the share of its in-service time it is really pulling that. Holds a small tank hot and another cold around the clock, so it cycles continuously whether or not anyone drinks from it.
That gives 35 W averaged across the hours it is on. - × 24 hours a day × 365 days — A hot-and-cold dispenser in a kitchen or office corner.

The thing worth knowing
A hot-and-cold dispenser is a small refrigerator and a small kettle sharing a cabinet, both running all year. The hot tank is the expensive half: holding two litres near boiling costs more over a year than the cooling does, and the great majority of that heat is lost to the room and then, in summer, removed again by the air conditioning.
Against electric kettle
Switch off the hot side if it is rarely used — most units have a separate switch at the back — or use a kettle, which heats only the water you are about to drink. In numbers: a water cooler / dispenser costs $56 a year on these assumptions, and electric kettle doing a comparable job costs $15 — a difference of $41 a year, or $412 over ten years at today’s rate.
Both at 18.34¢/kWh, each on its own standard usage assumption. Ten years is roughly the service life of either.
