Why this is lower than the number you will see elsewhere
Almost every published answer to this question multiplies the rating on the label by the hours the appliance is switched on. For a box or pedestal fan that gives 66 kWh a year, or $12.

Nothing here is hidden, so you can check it or change it. Working in the order the formula runs:
- 55 W — what it draws while it is actually drawing. This is the rating on the plate.
- × 100% — the share of its in-service time it is really pulling that. Constant at a given speed. Nothing cycles.
That gives 55 W averaged across the hours it is on. - × 8 hours a day × 150 days — One fan on medium through the warm half of the year.
55 × 8 × 150 ÷ 1,000 = 66 kWh a year. - × 18.34¢ — the US average residential rate for June 2026.

The thing worth knowing
A fan cools people, not rooms — it works by moving air across skin, and it adds a small amount of heat to the room from its own motor. Running one in an empty room is not merely useless, it is very slightly counterproductive. Used where someone is sitting, it allows a thermostat setting several degrees higher for the same comfort, which is the actual saving.
What it costs in your state
