Ceiling fan vs pedestal fan: running cost

The first thing suggested after “ceiling fan vs” is the standing fan, and the honest answer is that the electricity is very nearly the same. What differs is what each one can do. At the US average rate of 18.34¢ per kilowatt-hour the gap is $2.33 a year.

The verdict

The ceiling fan uses slightly less, and the gap is small enough that it should not decide anything. Both are small motors moving air, and both are among the cheapest things in a house to run — together they cost less in a year than a refrigerator does. A ceiling fan is a little more efficient at the same perceived cooling because a large slow blade moves more air per watt than a small fast one, which is also why it is quieter.

The assumptions behind those figures

Nothing above is a manufacturer’s claim. 35 W at 100% for 8 hours a day, 180 days a year, is where ceiling fan’s 53 kWh comes from; 55 W at 100% for 8 hours over 150 days is where box or pedestal fan’s 66 kWh comes from. The duty cycle is the input most published comparisons leave out, and it is why the ratings and the running costs are not in the same proportion here.

Which is better for sleeping?
A ceiling fan usually, because it moves a large volume of air slowly and quietly across the whole bed rather than a narrow fast stream at one person. A pedestal fan on a low setting and pointed past rather than at the bed gets close, and can be moved to whichever room is being used.
Do either of them let me turn the air conditioning down?
Yes, and that is where the money is. Air movement lets most people accept a setpoint about four degrees higher for the same comfort, and cooling energy moves roughly 3–5% per degree — so running a fan to raise the thermostat saves far more than the fan itself costs. Both do this equally well in the room they are in.
Does my state change the answer?
It changes the size of the gap, never its direction. The same pair costs $6.71 a year apart in Hawaii and $1.67 in Nevada. Whichever uses less electricity uses less everywhere; only what that is worth moves.
