Why this is lower than the number you will see elsewhere

Almost every published answer to this question multiplies the rating on the label by the hours the appliance is switched on. For a sous vide circulator that gives 216 kWh a year, or $40.

Nothing here is hidden, so you can check it or change it. Working in the order the formula runs:

  1. 900 W — what it draws while it is actually drawing. This is the rating on the plate.
  2. × 15% — the share of its in-service time it is really pulling that. Full draw for the first ten minutes to bring the bath up, then very little — holding an insulated, covered bath at temperature takes a fraction of the power.
    That gives 135 W averaged across the hours it is on.
  3. × 4 hours a day × 60 days — A four-hour cook, about once a week.
    135 × 4 × 60 ÷ 1,000 = 32 kWh a year.
  4. + standby — 1 W for the other 20.0 hours a day, which is 1.2 kWh a year. People leave this out and it is not always small.

The thing worth knowing

The number people expect is wrong by a factor of five. A 900 W circulator running for four hours does not use 3.6 kWh; it uses closer to 0.5, because after the initial heat-up it is only replacing losses from the water surface. Covering the bath and using an insulated container cuts even that in half — most of the remaining energy is evaporation from the top.
