Why this is lower than the number you will see elsewhere

Almost every published answer to this question multiplies the rating on the label by the hours the appliance is switched on. For a range hood that gives 50 kWh a year, or $9.08.

The arithmetic, step by step

Nothing here is hidden, so you can check it or change it. Working in the order the formula runs:

  1. 150 W — what it draws while it is actually drawing. This is the rating on the plate.
  2. × 100% — the share of its in-service time it is really pulling that. Constant at a given speed. High-capacity ducted hoods sit at the top of the range.
    That gives 150 W averaged across the hours it is on.
  3. × 1 hours a day × 330 days — An hour a day at a medium setting.
    150 × 1 × 330 ÷ 1,000 = 50 kWh a year.
  4. + standby — 1 W for the other 23.0 hours a day, which is 7.6 kWh a year. People leave this out and it is not always small.
  5. × 18.34¢ — the US average residential rate for June 2026.
    57 kWh × 18.34¢ = $10 a year.

The thing worth knowing

Same story as the bathroom fan, at larger scale: a powerful ducted hood can move several hundred cubic feet a minute of air you have already paid to heat or cool straight out of the building, and that air is replaced through every gap in the house. In a tightly built home a high-capacity hood can also depressurise the space enough to interfere with combustion appliances, which is a safety matter rather than an energy one.
