Why this is lower than the number you will see elsewhere
Almost every published answer to this question multiplies the rating on the label by the hours the appliance is switched on. For a food dehydrator that gives 165 kWh a year, or $30.

The arithmetic, step by step
Nothing here is hidden, so you can check it or change it. Working in the order the formula runs:
- 550 W — what it draws while it is actually drawing. This is the rating on the plate.
- × 60% — the share of its in-service time it is really pulling that. A heating element on a thermostat plus a fan that runs continuously. The element cycles; the fan does not.
That gives 330 W averaged across the hours it is on. - × 10 hours a day × 30 days — A ten-hour batch, roughly thirty days a year.
330 × 10 × 30 ÷ 1,000 = 99 kWh a year. - × 18.34¢ — the US average residential rate for June 2026.

The thing worth knowing
Low power for a very long time, which is the opposite profile to most kitchen appliances and produces a surprisingly large per-batch figure. Ten hours at an average of 330 W is more electricity than an hour of oven roasting. Loading it fully costs the same as loading it half full, so the energy per pound of food halves when you wait for a full load.
Against electric oven
Run full trays, and stop when the food is dry rather than when the timer ends — most people over-run by hours out of caution. In numbers: a food dehydrator costs $18 a year on these assumptions, and electric oven doing a comparable job costs $62 — a difference of $43 a year, or $434 over ten years at today’s rate.
Both at 18.34¢/kWh, each on its own standard usage assumption. Ten years is roughly the service life of either.
