Why this is lower than the number you will see elsewhere

Nothing here is hidden, so you can check it or change it. Working in the order the formula runs:

  1. 100 W — what it draws while it is actually drawing. This is the rating on the plate.
  2. × 35% — the share of its in-service time it is really pulling that. Thermostatic and cycles hard once the bed is warm.
    That gives 35 W averaged across the hours it is on.
  3. × 8 hours a day × 150 days — Overnight through winter.
    35 × 8 × 150 ÷ 1,000 = 42 kWh a year.
  4. × 18.34¢ — the US average residential rate for June 2026.
    42 kWh × 18.34¢ = $7.70 a year.

The thing worth knowing

Heating the person instead of the room is the cheapest comfort in the house by a wide margin. A blanket for a whole winter costs less than a space heater costs in a fortnight.
