Why this is lower than the number you will see elsewhere

  1. 800 W — what it draws while it is actually drawing. This is the rating on the plate.
  2. × 100% — the share of its in-service time it is really pulling that. Runs in short bursts triggered by the float. Hours per day is the sum of those bursts and swings wildly with rainfall.
    That gives 800 W averaged across the hours it is on.
  3. × 0.5 hours a day × 200 days — A wet spring in a house with a high water table.
    800 × 0.5 × 200 ÷ 1,000 = 80 kWh a year.
  4. + standby — 2 W for the other 23.5 hours a day, which is 9.4 kWh a year. People leave this out and it is not always small.
