The thing worth knowing

A kiln is the largest single load most hobbyists will ever plug in, and its cost is dominated by the firing schedule rather than the kiln. A slow ramp to a lower cone can use half the electricity of a fast ramp to a high one, and the difference between a well-insulated kiln and a tired one with worn brick is comparable. Per firing rather than per year is the only useful way to think about it.
