Why this is lower than the number you will see elsewhere

Almost every published answer to this question multiplies the rating on the label by the hours the appliance is switched on. For an electric sauna heater that gives 900 kWh a year, or $165.

Nothing here is hidden, so you can check it or change it. Working in the order the formula runs:

  1. 6,000 W — what it draws while it is actually drawing. This is the rating on the plate.
  2. × 55% — the share of its in-service time it is really pulling that. Full draw during the 30–45 minute heat-up, then cycling to hold temperature for the session.
    That gives 3300 W averaged across the hours it is on.
  3. × 1.5 hours a day × 100 days — A 4–6 person home sauna, used a couple of times a week.
    3300 × 1.5 × 100 ÷ 1,000 = 495 kWh a year.
  4. + standby — 2 W for the other 22.5 hours a day, which is 4.5 kWh a year. People leave this out and it is not always small.
  5. × 18.34¢ — the US average residential rate for June 2026.
    500 kWh × 18.34¢ = $92 a year.

The thing worth knowing

The heat-up is most of the cost, which makes session length almost free and frequency expensive. Two thirty-minute sessions on different days cost far more than one hour-long session, because you pay for the climb twice. This is the opposite of the intuition most people have about it.
