Why this is lower than the number you will see elsewhere
Almost every published answer to this question multiplies the rating on the label by the hours the appliance is switched on. For a golf cart charger that gives 713 kWh a year, or $131.
Draws steadily through the bulk charge, then tapers through absorption. Older ferroresonant chargers keep drawing after the pack is full.
The arithmetic, step by step
Nothing here is hidden, so you can check it or change it. Working in the order the formula runs:
- 950 W — what it draws while it is actually drawing. This is the rating on the plate.
- × 100% — the share of its in-service time it is really pulling that. Draws steadily through the bulk charge, then tapers through absorption. Older ferroresonant chargers keep drawing after the pack is full.
That gives 950 W averaged across the hours it is on. - × 5 hours a day × 150 days — Charging a 48 V lead-acid pack after most days' use.
950 × 5 × 150 ÷ 1,000 = 713 kWh a year. - + standby — 5 W for the other 19.0 hours a day, which is 14 kWh a year. People leave this out and it is not always small.

The thing worth knowing
Lead-acid charging is only around 80% efficient, so a fifth of what you pay for never reaches the battery — it becomes heat and hydrogen. Lithium conversions charge at closer to 95% and accept a partial charge without damage, which changes both the electricity and the battery replacement cycle. Older chargers that do not switch off at full charge are the main avoidable waste here.
What it costs in your state
