  1. 550 W — what it draws while it is actually drawing. This is the rating on the plate.
  2. × 100% — the share of its in-service time it is really pulling that. Full draw for the fifteen seconds the door is moving, several times a day.
    That gives 550 W averaged across the hours it is on.
  3. × 0.02 hours a day × 365 days — Roughly four door cycles a day.
    550 × 0.02 × 365 ÷ 1,000 = 4 kWh a year.
  4. + standby — 4 W for the other 24.0 hours a day, which is 35 kWh a year. People leave this out and it is not always small.
  5. × 18.34¢ — the US average residential rate for June 2026.

The thing worth knowing

The motor is essentially free — about a minute of running a week — and the standby is not. A modern opener holds a radio receiver, a light and often a Wi-Fi module alive around the clock, and that idle draw costs perhaps twenty times what actually opening the door does. It is a neat illustration of why nameplate wattage is a poor guide to annual cost.
