Why this is lower than the number you will see elsewhere

Almost every published answer to this question multiplies the rating on the label by the hours the appliance is switched on. For a central vacuum system that gives 60 kWh a year, or $11.

Nothing here is hidden, so you can check it or change it. Working in the order the formula runs:

  1. 1,500 W — what it draws while it is actually drawing. This is the rating on the plate.
  2. × 100% — the share of its in-service time it is really pulling that. Full draw while the motor runs, which is only while you are actually vacuuming.
    That gives 1500 W averaged across the hours it is on.
  3. × 0.4 hours a day × 100 days — About twenty-five minutes, twice a week.
    1500 × 0.4 × 100 ÷ 1,000 = 60 kWh a year.
  4. + standby — 2 W for the other 23.6 hours a day, which is 4.7 kWh a year. People leave this out and it is not always small.
  5. × 18.34¢ — the US average residential rate for June 2026.
    65 kWh × 18.34¢ = $12 a year.

The thing worth knowing

Higher wattage than a portable vacuum and a similar annual cost, because the run time is what matters and that is set by the size of your floors rather than the machine. The real difference is that the motor is in the garage, so the noise and the exhaust dust go somewhere else — that is the feature, not efficiency.

Against vacuum cleaner

Nothing meaningful. Included so a whole-house total reconciles. In numbers: a central vacuum system costs $12 a year on these assumptions, and vacuum cleaner doing a comparable job costs $4.95 — a difference of $6.92 a year, or $69 over ten years at today’s rate.
