Why this is lower than the number you will see elsewhere
Almost every published answer to this question multiplies the rating on the label by the hours the appliance is switched on. For an air compressor that gives 342 kWh a year, or $63.
The motor runs only to refill the tank after pressure drops. In light use that is a few minutes an hour; running an air tool continuously drives it far higher.
The arithmetic, step by step
Nothing here is hidden, so you can check it or change it. Working in the order the formula runs:
- 1,900 W — what it draws while it is actually drawing. This is the rating on the plate.
- × 25% — the share of its in-service time it is really pulling that. The motor runs only to refill the tank after pressure drops. In light use that is a few minutes an hour; running an air tool continuously drives it far higher.
That gives 475 W averaged across the hours it is on. - × 3 hours a day × 60 days — Occasional workshop use — inflating, nailing, blowing down.
475 × 3 × 60 ÷ 1,000 = 86 kWh a year. - × 18.34¢ — the US average residential rate for June 2026.

The thing worth knowing
A leaking compressor is the most expensive fault in a workshop, because the motor refills a tank that is emptying into nothing, around the clock if the machine is left switched on. A leak small enough to be inaudible can double the annual figure. Switch it off at the wall between sessions and the problem disappears whether or not you ever find the leak.
What it costs in your state
The appliance is the same everywhere; the rate is not. Running this air compressor costs $45 a year in Hawaii and $11 in Nevada — a difference of 4×.
