Why this is lower than the number you will see elsewhere
Almost every published answer to this question multiplies the rating on the label by the hours the appliance is switched on. For a septic aerator pump that gives 613 kWh a year, or $112.
Continuous by design. An aerobic treatment unit needs constant air to keep its bacteria alive, so this is not something to switch off.
The arithmetic, step by step
Nothing here is hidden, so you can check it or change it. Working in the order the formula runs:
- 70 W — what it draws while it is actually drawing. This is the rating on the plate.
- × 100% — the share of its in-service time it is really pulling that. Continuous by design. An aerobic treatment unit needs constant air to keep its bacteria alive, so this is not something to switch off.
That gives 70 W averaged across the hours it is on. - × 24 hours a day × 365 days — An aerobic septic system running as intended.

The thing worth knowing
One of the largest always-on loads a rural household has, and one almost nobody accounts for, because it sits in the garden inside a green lid. It cannot be switched off — the treatment process depends on it, and killing the bacteria is far more expensive than the electricity. What it can be is efficient: aerator draw varies by more than three to one across models of the same capacity.
