Why this is lower than the number you will see elsewhere

Almost every published answer to this question multiplies the rating on the label by the hours the appliance is switched on. For a robotic pool cleaner that gives 50 kWh a year, or $9.08.

Nothing here is hidden, so you can check it or change it. Working in the order the formula runs:

  1. 180 W — what it draws while it is actually drawing. This is the rating on the plate.
  2. × 100% — the share of its in-service time it is really pulling that. Runs its own pump and drive motors continuously through a cleaning cycle.
    That gives 180 W averaged across the hours it is on.
  3. × 2.5 hours a day × 110 days — A two-and-a-half-hour cycle, most days through the season.
    180 × 2.5 × 110 ÷ 1,000 = 50 kWh a year.
  4. + standby — 2 W for the other 21.5 hours a day, which is 4.7 kWh a year. People leave this out and it is not always small.
  5. × 18.34¢ — the US average residential rate for June 2026.
    54 kWh × 18.34¢ = $9.95 a year.

The thing worth knowing

A robotic cleaner has its own motor and costs its own electricity, but it replaces a suction or pressure cleaner that made the main pool pump work substantially harder for far longer. Counted properly it is usually a net saving, because it decouples cleaning from filtration and lets the main pump run fewer hours.
