Why this is lower than the number you will see elsewhere

Almost every published answer to this question multiplies the rating on the label by the hours the appliance is switched on. For a projector that gives 140 kWh a year, or $26.

The arithmetic, step by step

Nothing here is hidden, so you can check it or change it. Working in the order the formula runs:

  1. 280 W — what it draws while it is actually drawing. This is the rating on the plate.
  2. × 100% — the share of its in-service time it is really pulling that. Steady while running, plus a cool-down fan cycle of several minutes after switching off that people forget is still drawing.
    That gives 280 W averaged across the hours it is on.
  3. × 2.5 hours a day × 200 days — A couple of films a week on a lamp-based home projector.
    280 × 2.5 × 200 ÷ 1,000 = 140 kWh a year.
  4. + standby — 1 W for the other 21.5 hours a day, which is 4.3 kWh a year. People leave this out and it is not always small.
  5. × 18.34¢ — the US average residential rate for June 2026.
    144 kWh × 18.34¢ = $26 a year.

The thing worth knowing

A projector uses two to three times what a television of equivalent perceived size uses, because it is throwing light across a room rather than emitting it at the screen. Laser and LED models have narrowed that considerably against lamp-based ones, and eco mode typically cuts draw by around 30% for a brightness reduction most people do not notice in a dark room.

Against LED television

Eco or low-lamp mode in a properly darkened room. It also roughly doubles lamp life, which is worth more than the electricity. In numbers: a projector costs $26 a year on these assumptions, and led television doing a comparable job costs $31 — a difference of $4.93 a year, or $49 over ten years at today’s rate.

Both at 18.34¢/kWh, each on its own standard usage assumption. Ten years is roughly the service life of either.
