Why this is lower than the number you will see elsewhere

Almost every published answer to this question multiplies the rating on the label by the hours the appliance is switched on. For an OLED television that gives 201 kWh a year, or $37.

  1. 110 W — what it draws while it is actually drawing. This is the rating on the plate.
  2. × 100% — the share of its in-service time it is really pulling that. Content-dependent in a way no other display is: draw varies with how bright the picture is.
    That gives 110 W averaged across the hours it is on.
  3. × 5 hours a day × 365 days — A 65-inch OLED, five hours a day, mixed content.
    110 × 5 × 365 ÷ 1,000 = 201 kWh a year.
  4. + standby — 1 W for the other 19.0 hours a day, which is 6.9 kWh a year. People leave this out and it is not always small.
  5. × 18.34¢ — the US average residential rate for June 2026.
    208 kWh × 18.34¢ = $38 a year.

The thing worth knowing

An OLED has no backlight, so a dark film costs materially less to watch than a bright sports broadcast on the same set. It is the only display where what you watch changes the bill.
