Why this is lower than the number you will see elsewhere

Almost every published answer to this question multiplies the rating on the label by the hours the appliance is switched on. For an LED light bulb that gives 16 kWh a year, or $3.01.

  2. × 100% — the share of its in-service time it is really pulling that. Constant while lit — an LED driver holds a steady current, so there is no cycling and nameplate arithmetic is correct here.

The thing worth knowing

Buy lumens, not watts. A 9 W LED and a 60 W incandescent both give about 800 lumens; the wattage on the box tells you the cost, and the lumens tell you the light.
